General Info

The Porto Mannu Residence, Caissa Italia and Club Scacchi Tempio welcome you to the third edition of the Capo d’Orso Chess Open. After the success of the previous editions (2007, 2008), we decided not to rest on our laurels and opted insted for new investments in a mix of tradition and innovation. 

The (recent) tradition is the one our players began to appreciate already in 2007 and 2008: air-conditioned multifunctional playing hall (accessible to players with disabilities), spacious playing area, in-room beamer, wooden chess sets and boards, DGT clocks, daily bulletin, strong playing field, beauty prizes and on-line transmission of games. And, of course, our trademark: free lectures by leading IM/GM trainers.

 

Innovation comes under the form of an almost absolute first-time for Italy, let alone Sardinia: an 8-round 15’ rapid Chess960 tournament open to all players <2350 not exceeding the FM category, to be played on the Sunday immediately following the tournament. At last you will be given a chance to play in total light-heartedness and show your skills at the board without the need for studying theory eight hours a day. And with some good luck, you might well end by sweeping one of the many rich prizes, with no professionals in the way...

 

Somewhat in-between tradition and innovation lie the other two chess events: the U17 Sardinian chess School, open to Italian-speaking young talents, led by young International Masters Roberto Mogranzini and Martha Fierro (fresh winner of a silver medal on Board 1 at the recent Dresden 2008 Olympiads), and the Advanced Chess School by two fantastic teachers such as Grandmaster and former World Championship Candidate Artur Jusupov and the multi-awarded Grandmaster and author Mihail Marin. Simply the best chess can offer in terms of tradition and knowledge. The innovation side to all of this is that the two stages are completely for free for all participants in the Capo d’Orso Open. On its third year of life, Porto Mannu becomes “four-in-one” and offers almost a full two weeks of high-level chess at very competitive rates, adding its unique touch in terms of hospitality, relax, competition, quality of the services and, of course, the call of nature.

The Porto Mannu bay, under the shadow of the Homeric Capo d’Orso (Bear Cape) near Palau, is one of the most beautiful locations in Sardinia. Just minutes away from world-renowned Porto Cervo and Porto Raphael, or the magnificent Emerald Coast, the Porto Mannu resort faces the Natural Sea Park and Archipelagus of the La Maddalena Island. 

At the Porto Mannu Residence you will find all that is needed for an unforgettable chess&vacation experience: private white sand beach, two swimming pools, beauty center and spa, diving center and of course excellent Italian food, wine and hospitality!

 

Players and accompanying persons will be lodged in the Porto Mannu Residence, within immediate walking distance from the playing hall, the sea and all leisure facilities either in 2-3 room apartments or in double rooms. Full board includes continental breakfast, and gorgeous and abundant Italian food for the remaining two meals, and wine too! You can have all this for no more than € 57/day (+ € 12 difference for single occupancy; babies 0/3 y.o. free; children 4/12 y.o. € 28/day). Prices valid 15-30 May 2009 for players and accompanying persons alike.

For your information, the nearest port is Palau, the neareast international airport is Olbia-Costa Smeralda.

 

CONDITIONS FOR GM/IM

Invitations to titled players have already been sent out. However, all GMs and IMs with rating >2400 can apply for our special “1+1” condition. This means that for every titled player paying for his costs (full board + entry fee) the organization will offer a free full board for the same period provided that the accompanying person shares the same room as the player and does not take part in any chess event. Inquire today for your “1+1” condition: places are limited.

Places in the tournament are limited to 160 players. We strongly recommend that you enter well in advance and in any case before 31 March. The entry fee depends on the actual date of payment:

Participants to all events are required to enter in advance. Also, generally the demand is higher than our offer so that if you sleep on it there are high chances that you will not make it to Sardinia. Please remember that entries will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis and that entry fees are non-returnable.

You are strongly invited to use the electronic form on our website to enroll. 

At the end of the procedure, you will be allowed to pay your entry fee by Visa/Mastercard credit card via our secure web server. This is by far the most cost-effective means of payment, as transaction costs and red tape are limited to a minimum (a surcharge as minimal as € 2,50 will be added for transaction costs). You will receive a confirmation of your successful entry via e-mail and you shall require no further action until your first round game.

1 name, address, grade (category) and rating for each player;

2 receipt of payment.
